The beach runs for around a kilometre beneath the cliffs, ending near Vlychada marina, the island’s small fishing and yacht harbour.
Above the marina sits the Tomato Industrial Museum, housed in a former tomato paste factory and now part of the Santorini Arts Factory. It is one of the few genuine industrial heritage sites on the island, and it pairs well with a beach afternoon.

Why Do the Cliffs at Vlychada Look Like That?
The cliffs are pumice and volcanic ash, not rock in the usual sense. Ash fell in thick layers during Santorini’s eruptions, compacted, and then spent thousands of years being cut by wind and winter rain.
Pumice is soft and uneven, so it erodes at different speeds across a single face. That produces the fluting, the overhangs and the rounded hollows that make the cliffs look sculpted rather than broken.

What Is the Sand Like at Vlychada?

Late afternoon. The cliffs face roughly north, so the low sun rakes across them and picks out every ridge. Midday flattens them.
- June and September: warm sea, open facilities, few people
- July and August: busier but still calm by island standards, and the sand gets hot
- May and October: quiet and beautiful, though some bars close
- Winter: dramatic, empty, and worth the walk even without swimming
Vlychada also handles wind better than the east coast. When the summer meltemi blows and Kamari turns choppy, the south coast is often the calmer choice.
What Facilities Does Vlychada Have?
Limited, and that is the point.
